DEAR DIARY:
WHAT MY DOCTOR
NEVER TOLD ME ABOUT

DIETING

You don't need to look any further for answers to your weight loss questions.  Learn how I lost 50 pounds using Atkins low-carb plan.  It was the hardest 13 months of my life.  Before, I had undergone cosmetic surgery - liposuction to lose weight.  It worked but I never learned how to get healthy the right way.  But you can.  Read my book for tips to lose weight.  Order your copy of this book for yourself, add to a gift basket, as a birthday present, a surprise gesture, or as an e-book for an iPad, Nook, iPod or Kindle.

=========

After having liposuction in 2002, I maintained my size 16 without dieting for a few years and then got lazy.  I started ballooning up to 208 pounds and was back into my plus-size clothing and pants with elastic waists before I knew what had happened.  I also found myself unable to walk up a flight of stairs without wheezing.  It was time I stopped fooling myself.

Then my daughter told me she was getting married in a year.  I was not about to walk down that aisle with my 208 pound body squeezed into a plus-size dress!

I needed to admit my fitness level sucked.  I needed a change and I only had 13 months.

IT WAS TIME!

EXCERPTS:
Wake Up Call

In April, my doctor told me my cholesterol was 240 (HDL was 47, LDL was 174, Triglyceride was 97).  With my weight over 200 on my 5’7” frame and the fact that I’m an African American, I was on the path for diabetes.  I’ve read about the effects diabetes has on an individual.

I do not want diabetes.

I was scared.  Many times before, the doctor had warned me about my weight and my cholesterol levels, but what the heck.  I’ve lived over 50 years with these problems.  Why should I do something about it now?  Sure, I had trouble sometimes walking up the six stairs from the living room to the bedroom, but doesn’t everyone?  And that last little bit of ice cream in the gallon jug will only go to waste if I don’t eat it before I go to bed.  Who knows if it would still be good tomorrow?  And those leftovers – potatoes, pastas, BBQ, cookies, cakes, muffins, rice – I can’t afford to waste food like that.

But the doctor used the dreaded “D” word and this time I heard him.  I had to make some changes.  I had to lose at least 50 pounds and get my cholesterol level down to 200 which, hopefully, would fix my HDL, LDL and Triglyceride levels.  That was it.  That’s all I needed to do.

Really!?!

Wednesday, July 8

I’m off tomorrow so I weighed in today.  I am still at 195.  Still 13 pounds down.  I can accept that.  Actually, I love that.  It’s been years since I’ve lost 13 pounds and kept it off.

I will keep it off.  I won’t do what I always do and celebrate by eating a whole chocolate cake.

Ummmm, cake!

Okay, stop it.  Get back on the plan.

MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS ASKED:

How much weight did I really lose while dieting?  My dieting is still a work in progress.  So far I have lost 50 pounds in 15 months.  I still have another 20 pounds to go before I'm satisfied and can finally stop dieting and start maintaining.

I went from a size 16 to a size 10.  I don't ever remember wearing size 10, not even when I was on the road up to size 22/24.  Somehow I had skipped size 10.  Now I'm enjoying shopping for clothes that don't have an elastic waist.

What size will I be when I have finished dieting and have lost those last 20 pounds?  Hmmm!

How did I do it?   I finally made a conscious decision to start a weight lost/fitness program which involved getting off the sofa, away from the refrigerator, and start walking or riding my bicycle outdoors.  I also needed a plan.  I've been following the Atkins Community as a visitor - I felt too fat and shy to join in.  But what I learned there helped me tremendously. They helped me understand my low-carb path and shared new and healthy low-carb recipes with me.  Baby steps, to be sure, but at least I was moving and learning and getting smaller.
